The 24th Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) concluded in Astana on July 4, bringing together leaders from 16 member and observer states under the expanded SCO+ format. The high-level meeting focused on fostering regional cooperation and sustainable development among its members.
During the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed designating 2025 as the “SCO Year of Sustainable Development”. This initiative aims to unite SCO members in focusing on environmental protection and promoting new drivers of economic growth.
“We should seize this opportunity to enhance our collaboration in sustainable development,” President Xi stated. “By working together, we can foster innovation and ensure a prosperous future for our region.”
President Xi emphasized the importance of regional cooperation through various platforms. These include a demonstration base for agricultural technology exchange and training, a local economic and trade cooperation demonstration area, and an ecology and environment innovation base. These initiatives are expected to bolster technological innovation, trade facilitation, and environmental sustainability across the SCO member states.
The proposal was warmly received by the attending leaders, who reiterated their commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. The designation of 2025 as the SCO Year of Sustainable Development is anticipated to enhance collaborative efforts in addressing environmental challenges and promoting economic growth.
The SCO, comprising countries across Eurasia, plays a pivotal role in regional security, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange. The initiatives discussed at the summit highlight the organization’s dedication to addressing global challenges through collective action and mutual support.
The next SCO summit is scheduled to be held in 2024, where member states will further discuss and implement the initiatives outlined in Astana, paving the way toward a sustainable and prosperous future for the region.
