Astana, Kazakhstan — Chinese President Xi Jinping met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday, reiterating China’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism and the central role of the UN in international affairs.
Amid a rapidly changing global landscape filled with unprecedented challenges and opportunities, President Xi emphasized that the United Nations remains the core platform for practicing multilateralism and enhancing global governance. He stated, “The role of the UN can only be strengthened, not weakened, in addressing the pressing issues facing humanity.”
The upcoming Summit of the Future, to be held at the UN headquarters in New York this September, was a focal point of their discussion. President Xi expressed China’s support for the summit, hoping it would send a positive signal of upholding multilateralism, strengthening solidarity and cooperation, and promoting a more just and equitable global governance system.
Furthermore, Xi highlighted China’s backing of the UN’s leading role in advancing reforms of the international financial architecture and in the global governance of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. He underscored the importance of these efforts in fostering sustainable development and maintaining international stability.
Secretary-General Guterres acknowledged China’s significant contributions to the UN and welcomed its ongoing support in addressing global challenges. The meeting underscored the mutual commitment to cooperation between China and the United Nations in promoting peace, development, and shared prosperity.
