SCO Members Aim for Deeper Mass Media Cooperation at Astana Meeting

Government officials and representatives from major media organizations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states convened on Wednesday in Astana, Kazakhstan, to discuss enhancing cooperation in mass media. The meeting took place ahead of the 24th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO.

Hosted by China Media Group (CMG), the roundtable was themed “Pulling Together Media Power and Carrying Forward the Shanghai Spirit.” Attendees reflected on the achievements in media collaboration among SCO countries and explored avenues for deeper cooperation in the future.

Shen Haixiong, president of CMG, emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between mass media organizations to promote exchanges and mutual learning among SCO members. He highlighted the need to tell stories that foster people-to-people connections and to create a fair, objective, and healthy global public opinion environment.

“By working together, we can enhance mutual understanding and trust among our nations,” Shen said. “Mass media has a pivotal role in shaping perceptions and bridging cultural divides.”

The meeting underscored the commitment of SCO member states to collaborate in the field of mass media, aligning with the principles of the Shanghai Spirit, which emphasizes mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for cultural diversity, and pursuit of common development.

The SCO, founded in 2001, is a political, economic, and security alliance that includes China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The organization’s focus on media cooperation reflects its broader goals of enhancing regional stability and prosperity through collaboration and dialogue.
