China has taken a significant step towards sustainable energy production with the launch of the Wushi 23-5 oilfield cluster in the Beibu Gulf, south China. Operated by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), the environmentally friendly oilfield began operations on Monday, marking a milestone in the nation’s low-carbon energy endeavors.
A Milestone in Sustainable Energy
Located in the eastern waters of the Beibu Gulf, the Wushi 23-5 cluster comprises 46 production wells and is capable of achieving a peak daily crude oil output of over 2,000 tonnes. This substantial output underscores China’s commitment to meeting energy demands while adhering to green principles.
“From design and construction to production, the oilfield cluster adopts environmentally friendly and low-carbon technologies throughout the entire cycle,” said Dai Yi, general manager of the Wushi oilfield operation company under CNOOC’s Zhanjiang Branch. “We have also achieved zero discharge and zero pollution for the water used in production.”
Innovative Low-Carbon Technologies
A first in the Beibu Gulf, the oilfield is supplied with electricity from shore, significantly reducing offshore gas consumption. “It reduces the annual offshore gas consumption by an amount equivalent to 20,000 tonnes of standard coal,” Dai added, highlighting the project’s contribution to emission reduction.
The cluster employs a comprehensive production model that encompasses oil and gas production, gathering, processing, and sales. Its advanced processing technology effectively converts associated natural gas into liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for storage, loading, and transportation, maximizing resource utilization.
Boosting Local Green Industries
“Taking the development of the Wushi 23-5 oilfield cluster as an opportunity, we have promoted local green industries, including fishing-photovoltaic complementary projects and the development of offshore wind resources,” said Deng Yong, deputy general manager of the CNOOC Zhanjiang Branch. “This serves as a demonstration for the low-carbon transformation of offshore oil exploration and production.”
The Wushi 23-5 oilfield cluster sets a precedent for integrating traditional energy production with sustainable practices, paving the way for future developments in environmentally conscious offshore oilfields. Its successful operation reflects China’s broader commitment to green energy and offers valuable insights for businesses and investors interested in the region’s evolving energy landscape.
