Beijing, China—Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech at the Conference Marking the 70th Anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, calling for renewed commitment to these principles and urging global unity in building a community with a shared future for mankind.
Addressing distinguished guests and diplomatic envoys, Xi highlighted the historical significance of the Five Principles, which were initiated 70 years ago as a groundbreaking achievement in international relations. The principles—mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence—have become universally recognized norms guiding state-to-state relations.
“The Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence have transcended time and space, overcoming estrangement and showing robust resilience and everlasting relevance,” Xi stated. He emphasized that these principles have laid an important intellectual foundation for a more just and equitable international order.
Building a Shared Future
Xi Jinping stressed the need to carry forward the Five Principles under new circumstances by building a community with a shared future for mankind. He noted that this vision aligns with the core spirit of the Five Principles and reflects the interconnected interests of all nations in today’s world.
“We must work together to implement the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative,” Xi said, urging nations to advance high-quality cooperation and deliver more benefits to all people.
Commitment to Peaceful Development
Reiterating China’s resolve to stay on the path of peaceful development, Xi assured that China will continue to promote global partnerships based on equality, openness, and cooperation. “Every increase of China’s strength is an increase of the prospects of world peace,” he affirmed.
He also announced China’s support for Global South cooperation, including establishing a Global South research center, providing scholarships, and launching a Global South youth leaders program. “Together, we should be the staunch force for peace,” Xi urged, calling for enhanced unity and cooperation among developing countries.
Embracing Multilateralism
Xi Jinping underscored the importance of fairness and justice in global governance, advocating for true multilateralism and strengthened authority of the United Nations. “World affairs should be handled through extensive consultation, not dictated by those with more muscles,” he stated.
He called on all nations to uphold the principle of sovereign equality, cement mutual respect, and embrace an open and inclusive mindset. “The world is big enough to accommodate the common development and common progress of all countries,” Xi remarked.
Looking Ahead
Concluding his speech, Xi Jinping called for collective efforts to address global challenges and build a better future for humanity. “Let us shoulder the historic missions and forge ahead together to build a community with a shared future for mankind,” he encouraged.
The conference, held in Beijing, gathered leaders, diplomats, and representatives from various countries, reflecting the ongoing relevance of the Five Principles in today’s complex international landscape.
