At precisely 7 PM, Huang Jie, adorned in traditional Miao ethnic attire, greets his online audience on his livestream channel. Holding freshly peeled bamboo shoots collected by local villagers, he enthusiastically introduces them to viewers across the country. In less than an hour, all the agricultural products showcased are sold out.
Huang’s foray into live streaming began in November 2023 after he was inspired by other rural content creators promoting their local goods. He launched a Douyin account named “Qingshan Village Chief,” where he shares short videos capturing the essence of rural life and the scenic beauty of his hometown, Guandong Village in Mayang Miao Autonomous County, central China’s Hunan Province.
Joining forces with six young villagers, Huang formed a livestream team to sell agricultural products online. Their innovative approach quickly gained traction, turning Huang into a well-known influencer in the region. This initiative not only brought attention to their village but also provided a sustainable income source for many local farmers.
“We offer a variety of products, but quality is non-negotiable,” Huang emphasized. To maintain high standards, he frequently discusses the importance of “reputation awareness” with villagers during meetings. The team meticulously screens and randomly inspects each product before featuring it in their livestreams.
Understanding that most items are fresh produce, Huang and his team drive an hour after each livestream to the nearest county or city to deliver products to courier companies, ensuring prompt delivery. This dedication has earned the trust and loyalty of their growing customer base.
“After continuous effort and exploration, our viewership keeps increasing,” Huang noted. “We now average 300 to 500 orders per session, with cumulative views around 20,000. Usually, we sell out all products on the same day.”
Huang’s success story highlights the transformative potential of digital platforms in enhancing traditional agricultural practices. By embracing live streaming, he has not only revitalized his community’s economy but also set an example for rural innovation across the region.
