China’s women’s foil fencing team has secured all individual and team quotas for the upcoming 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Leading the squad is Chen Qingyuan, who is preparing for her second Olympic appearance after finishing 11th in the individual women’s foil event at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Born and raised in Fujian Province in southeast China, Chen began fencing in the fourth grade. Her dedication and talent quickly propelled her onto the international stage. In 2018, she helped China clinch a silver medal in the women’s team foil event at the Asian Games in Jakarta. The following year, she earned a bronze medal at the Asian Fencing Championships in Japan.
Chen’s ascent continued when she claimed a silver medal at the Fencing Grand Prix in Qatar, securing her spot at the Tokyo Olympics. However, the journey towards Paris 2024 has not been without challenges. In 2022 and 2023, Chen struggled with her form, hitting a low point with a first-round exit at the Shanghai Grand Prix in May last year. These consecutive defeats tested her confidence.
Undeterred, Chen worked tirelessly to regain her form. Her perseverance paid off when she won her first-ever World Cup gold medal in January this year.
“I was so shocked at that time. I could not believe it,” Chen reflected. “I had thought about winning a world title and perhaps becoming a world champion one day, but I didn’t know when it might happen. It was definitely a surprise and greatly boosted my confidence.”
As she gears up for her second Olympic journey, Chen is aiming for the top of the podium in Paris.
“I think the Olympic stage is almost like a sacred place for me,” she said. “Even though I exited early in my last Olympic appearance, I spent a lot of time watching other athletes. They all gave their best performances. They were all in, but there was only one winner. I hope I will be the winner this time in Paris.”
Chen’s determination and resilience embody the spirit of an athlete striving for excellence. Her journey resonates with many who aspire to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams on the world stage.
