Feng Shanshan Confident in China’s Golf Prospects at Paris Olympics

Former LPGA world number one Feng Shanshan has reflected on her memorable experience at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where she secured a bronze medal for China in women’s golf. In an exclusive interview with CGTN Sports Scene’s Shen Xiang, Feng shared her pride and excitement from that achievement and her optimism for China’s golfers at the upcoming Paris Olympics.

“It was a very special experience because that was my first Olympic Games,” Feng recalled. “And I thought it might be my last Olympic Games also. So I did give myself a little pressure. I also set a little goal. And I also really wanted to get a medal. So I actually did it at the end.”

When she realized she had clinched the bronze medal in Rio, Feng was overjoyed. “It was like a dream come true,” she said. “I think I will remember it the whole time.” Her accomplishment not only marked a personal milestone but also a significant moment for golf in China.

Looking ahead to the Paris Olympics, Feng expressed strong confidence in China’s current top female golfers, Yin Ruoning and Lin Xiyu. “I would say that both of them are very competitive,” she commented. “Right now, they are both highly ranked in the world. So I would say that both of them have chances to stand on the podium if they bring out their ‘A’ games.”

Yin and Lin have been making impressive strides on the global stage, and Feng believes their participation in Paris will continue to elevate the presence of Chinese golfers internationally. Her support and encouragement highlight the growing strength and potential of China’s athletes in the sport.

As someone who has paved the way for future generations, Feng’s insights and optimism are inspiring for both the players and fans. The anticipation builds as Yin Ruoning and Lin Xiyu prepare to represent China in women’s golf at the Paris Olympics, aiming to follow in Feng’s footsteps and perhaps make history of their own.
