Portugal’s national football team coach, Roberto Martinez, has issued a plea to supporters of star player Cristiano Ronaldo to cease invading the pitch during matches and training sessions at Euro 2024. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Martinez emphasized the dangers and disruptions caused by such incidents.
“[Ronaldo] is a very experienced player who has been with the national team for over 20 years,” Martinez stated. “He knows the kind of support fans provide—not just Portugal fans, but football fans in general—but I hope there won’t be any more pitch invasions. It is dangerous, and it is not good for football. It’s not the part of the game that we want to see.”
The appeal comes after several incidents during Portugal’s Euro 2024 campaign. On June 22, during and after Portugal’s 3-0 victory over Türkiye at the BVB Stadion in Dortmund, six fans breached security and entered the field. Earlier, on June 14, a supporter interrupted a team practice session by invading the pitch.
These disruptions have prompted UEFA, the European football governing body, to implement additional security measures for the tournament. UEFA has also announced that criminal complaints will be filed against any supporters who invade the pitch.
Cristiano Ronaldo, known for his gracious interactions with fans, took selfies with the pitch invaders on both occasions. However, these incidents led to delays and safety concerns. During the match against Türkiye, German referee Felix Zwayer was forced to halt the game until security personnel removed the intruder.
Martinez’s call reflects a growing concern over fan behavior and the need to maintain safety and order during high-profile sporting events. Pitch invasions not only pose risks to players and officials but also interrupt the flow of the game, affecting both teams and spectators worldwide.
As football remains a unifying global sport with a massive following across Asia and beyond, maintaining a secure environment is essential for the enjoyment and integrity of the game. Fans are encouraged to express their support from the stands, respecting the boundaries that ensure everyone’s safety.
