Global Agricultural Leaders Gather in Beijing to Advance Green Development and Supply Chains

The 2024 China Agricultural Conference for International Economic and Trade Cooperation kicked off in Beijing on June 25, drawing over 300 participants from across the globe. With a spotlight on green intelligence and strengthening global supply chains, the event brought together diplomats, international organization representatives, business leaders, and corporate delegates to foster collaborative efforts in agriculture.

At the opening ceremony, Yu Jianlong, Vice Chairman of the China Chamber of International Commerce, addressed the pressing issue of global food security. “As the world faces food security challenges, the Chinese business community will continue to share development opportunities with counterparts worldwide to maintain the resilience of the international agricultural supply chain,” he stated.

Zhang Zhongjun, acting representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in China, emphasized the organization’s commitment to collaborative growth. “We will continue to work with all parties to serve China’s rural areas, share China’s experiences, and promote green agricultural development to facilitate the transformation of modern agricultural and food systems,” Zhang said.

The Ambassador of Jordan to China, Hussam Al Husseini, delivered a keynote speech highlighting the necessity of united action against global challenges such as food security and climate change. “Concerted and swift action is necessary,” he urged. Since establishing a strategic partnership in 2015, China and Jordan have deepened economic and trade cooperation in agriculture, reflecting the event’s theme of international collaboration.

China’s agricultural sector has made significant strides in green transformation and sustainable development in recent years. According to a report by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the China Agricultural Green Development Research Society, in 2022, China modernized 505 large and medium-sized irrigation districts and improved irrigation across 33.7 million mu (approximately 2.25 million hectares). These efforts have substantially enhanced the production capacity of grain and key agricultural products.

By the end of 2022, China had established 102 bases for organic agricultural products and 748 standardized production bases for green food raw materials, covering an area exceeding 168 million mu. These developments underscore China’s dedication to advancing green agriculture and contributing to global food security.
