The recent signing of an intergovernmental agreement on the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project marks a significant milestone in Central Asian connectivity. On June 6, under the auspices of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the agreement was formalized in Beijing, setting the stage for a transformative infrastructure endeavor.
The railway is set to begin in Kashgar, located in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and traverse Kyrgyzstan before entering Uzbekistan. This strategic corridor is poised to extend further, reaching West Asia and South Asia through the “Middle Corridor,” enhancing trade routes and fostering economic integration across the region.
In an exclusive discussion, Akylbek Japarov, the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, shared insights on how this landmark project will bolster his country’s socioeconomic development. “The railway will not only enhance our connectivity but also stimulate economic growth by opening new markets for our goods,” Japarov noted. With Kyrgyzstan and China sharing a 1,000-kilometer border, the opening of a third crossing later this year is anticipated to boost both trade and people-to-people exchanges.
Japarov emphasized the alignment of China’s development model with Kyrgyzstan’s aspirations. “China’s approach to development highly suits our country’s needs,” he stated, praising President Xi Jinping for his commitment to serving the interests of the Chinese nation. The Prime Minister highlighted the shifting dynamics of global decision-making, observing that “the center of gravity is moving towards our region,” signaling new opportunities for collaboration and growth.
The railway project, a signature initiative under the Belt and Road Initiative, signifies the strengthening relations between China and Kyrgyzstan. It is expected to bring significant benefits not only to Kyrgyzstan but also to the broader Central Asian region by enhancing infrastructure, creating jobs, and facilitating trade.
Beyond economic implications, Japarov reflected on the cultural ties between the two nations. A connoisseur of Chinese culture, he recited classic verses of the renowned poet Li Bai, symbolizing the deep-rooted historical connections and mutual appreciation between Kyrgyzstan and China.
As Kyrgyzstan embarks on this new chapter, the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway stands as a testament to regional cooperation and the shared vision of prosperity and development in Asia.
