Stuttgart, Germany — Hosts Germany became the first team to secure a spot in the Euro 2024 knockout stages with a convincing 2-0 victory over Hungary on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Scotland drew 1-1 with Switzerland, and Croatia’s advancement hopes are uncertain after a dramatic tie with Albania.
Following their emphatic 5-1 win against Scotland in the opener, Germany continued their strong form in Group A. Jamal Musiala opened the scoring midway through the first half, capitalizing on Ilkay Gundogan’s persistent play inside the box. Gundogan himself sealed the win in the 67th minute, finishing from a Maximilian Mittelstaedt assist.
The victory in Stuttgart ensures Germany tops the group with six points and guarantees their progression to the last 16. The team’s resurgence under Julian Nagelsmann marks the first time they’ve won their opening two matches in a major tournament since Euro 2012.
“We were determined to confirm our performance against Scotland,” said captain Manuel Neuer. “We dominated and deserved the win. The euphoria in the stadium was palpable.”
Hungary fought valiantly but struggled to match Germany’s quality in attack. Their chances of advancing now rely on the outcome of their final group match.
Scotland and Switzerland Share the Spoils
In Cologne, Scotland and Switzerland played to a 1-1 draw. Backed by a passionate crowd, Scotland took an early lead when Callum McGregor set up Scott McTominay, whose shot deflected off Fabian Schaer and into the net. Switzerland equalized through Xherdan Shaqiri, who capitalized on a defensive error to unleash a stunning strike.
Both teams had opportunities to claim victory. Scotland’s Grant Hanley hit the post with a late header, while Switzerland saw Breel Embolo’s goal ruled out for offside.
“It was a good team performance against a strong opponent,” Scotland manager Steve Clarke commented. “We reacted well after a disappointing night and are still alive in the tournament.”
Switzerland may have done enough to progress but will aim to secure their place by drawing or winning against Germany in their final group match. Scotland needs a win against Hungary to keep their hopes alive.
Croatia’s Fate Uncertain After Albanian Draw
In Hamburg, Croatia and Albania played out a thrilling 2-2 draw. Albania’s Qazim Laci put his side ahead early, but Croatia’s Andrej Kramaric leveled the score in the 74th minute. Klaus Gjasula then inadvertently gave Croatia the lead with an own goal, only to redeem himself by scoring a stoppage-time equalizer.
Croatia, semifinalists in the 2022 World Cup, now face a must-win situation against defending champions Italy to advance from Group B.
“We will believe until the very end,” said Kramaric. “We hope to be a bit luckier against Italy.”
Albania, despite strong performances, has struggled to maintain leads. Coach Sylvinho remains optimistic: “We have to fight for every single point. I’m proud of the players; we have to enjoy the moment.”
Group B action continues with Spain facing Italy in a highly anticipated match on Thursday. In Group C, England takes on Denmark, while Slovenia meets Serbia.
