Chinese Premier Li Qiang Highlights New Era in China-Malaysia Relations

At a celebratory reception on Wednesday marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, Chinese Premier Li Qiang emphasized that the two nations have elevated their bilateral ties to a new starting point and share a commitment to fostering this relationship for future generations.

Premier Li and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim attended the event, which also highlighted the Year of China-Malaysia Friendship. In his keynote speech, Li reflected on the past five decades of cooperation, noting that both countries have adhered to principles of independent strategies, mutual benefit, and cultural affinity.

“Over the past 50 years, China and Malaysia have committed to strategies of independence, win-win cooperation, mutual support, and cultural affinity,” Li stated. “The development of our relationship offers valuable experiences and inspirations, which are shared assets for both sides.”

Highlighting the significance of the Year of China-Malaysia Friendship, Li underscored the importance of genuine friendship in today’s complex global landscape. “We live in a world that lacks peace and tranquility, yet is rife with disputes and conflicts,” he said. “It is a world that needs more mutual understanding and less egocentrism; more openness and cooperation, and less isolation and confrontation.”

Premier Li called for increased emphasis on mutually beneficial cooperation and a departure from zero-sum thinking. He advocated for greater empathy among nations, adhering to the principle of not imposing on others what one does not desire for oneself.

“The celebrations for the Year of China-Malaysia Friendship are not only aimed at enhancing our bilateral relations but also at promoting the spirit of friendship globally,” Li remarked. “We hope to inspire and unite more people around the world to work together towards a better, shared future.”

Concluding his address, Li stressed that friendship has always been, and will continue to be, the defining feature of China-Malaysia relations. “Be it in the past, present, or future, friendship remains at the core of our relationship,” he affirmed.
