Andy Murray Triumphs in 1,000th Match with Queen’s Club Victory

At age 37, former world No.1 Andy Murray celebrated a significant milestone in his illustrious tennis career by winning his 1,000th tour-level singles match. Facing Australia’s Alexei Popyrin at the Queen’s Club Championships on Tuesday, Murray secured a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory to advance to the second round.

Playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, with his mother Judy Murray watching from the stands, Murray displayed resilience reminiscent of his prime. After a dominant first set, Popyrin battled back, leveling the match by taking the second set. Undeterred, Murray elevated his game in the decider, ultimately clinching his 739th career win with a deft volley at match point.

“I didn’t realize—my mom told me it’s my 1,000th match on tour,” Murray remarked post-match. “A lot of matches and a lot of wear and tear on the body. It’s not easy, but I’m pushing through it.”

This victory marks Murray’s first tour-level win since the Miami Open in March. Despite entering the tournament as a wildcard, he is aiming for a sixth title at Queen’s Club, a venue that has been a fruitful ground throughout his career.

“Any win you can get is important; that’s why we’re playing—to try and win matches,” Murray added. “With Wimbledon a few weeks away, I want to try and build up confidence and get some matches in my legs.”

Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion, is seeking to make a significant impact at the All England Club this year after not progressing past the third round in the last three editions. His remarkable journey from considering retirement due to a severe hip injury to returning to competitive play after surgeries serves as inspiration to athletes worldwide, including those in Asia who face similar challenges.

Looking ahead, Murray will face Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the next round. The tournament also saw top seed Carlos Alcaraz advance with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Francisco Cerundolo, while second seed Alex de Minaur was upset by Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti in a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 match.

As the grass-court season progresses, tennis enthusiasts around the globe, including in Asia where the sport continues to grow in popularity, watch eagerly in anticipation of Wimbledon. Murray’s performance at Queen’s Club offers a preview of the excitement to come at the prestigious Grand Slam.
