China’s Ministry of Commerce has expressed strong opposition to the United Kingdom’s recent decision to impose sanctions on five Chinese companies, urging the British government to immediately rectify its actions.
On June 13, the UK government announced sanctions against five Chinese entities, citing alleged involvement with Russia. In response, the Chinese ministry criticized the UK’s move, stating that it disregards China’s representations and the positive momentum in China-UK economic and trade relations.
“The UK’s imposition of unilateral sanctions, without basis in international law or authorization from the United Nations, is a typical act of ‘long-arm jurisdiction’,” the Ministry of Commerce stated on Wednesday. “We urge the British side to cease targeting Chinese companies without restrictions or conditions.”
The ministry emphasized that the UK’s actions have adversely affected bilateral ties and could undermine the confidence of investors and businesses engaged in commerce between the two nations.
“The Chinese government will take firm and strong measures to defend the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises,” the statement added, signaling potential retaliatory actions if the sanctions are not lifted.
This development marks a significant strain in China-UK relations, highlighting the complexities of international trade amidst geopolitical tensions. Analysts suggest that both nations may need to engage in dialogue to resolve the dispute and prevent further escalation that could impact global markets.
