From Humble Beginnings in Liangjiahe
Fifty-five years ago, a 15-year-old Xi Jinping journeyed to Liangjiahe Village in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province as an “educated youth.” Immersing himself in rural life, he spent seven formative years working and living alongside farmers. These experiences solidified his unwavering commitment to serving the people.
A Lifelong Commitment to Service
After his time in Liangjiahe, Xi moved to Zhengding, a poor county in north China’s Hebei Province. There, he continued his grassroots work, often traveling into remote areas to understand the challenges faced by locals. Li Yaping, a former Zhengding County official, recalled Xi’s dedication: China had many tasks awaiting, and some had to shoulder the responsibility.
In Zhengding, Xi noticed that the state’s annual grain procurement quota of 38 million kilograms left locals hungry. He advocated on their behalf, writing to the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee about the excessive quota. His efforts led to a reduction of the quota to 24 million kilograms, alleviating hunger in the region. Cheng Baohuai, then secretary of the Zhengding County CPC Committee, noted how the people appreciated Xi’s genuine concern for their well-being.
Ascending to National Leadership
From a rural Party branch secretary to the general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, president of China, and chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xi Jinping has always prioritized the people’s welfare. Upon his election as general secretary in November 2012, he pledged his dedication to serving the nation’s citizens, stating, “The people’s wish for a happy life is our mission.”
Xi’s journey from a humble village youth to a national leader underscores his deep-rooted belief in public service. His life story reflects a consistent focus on addressing the needs of the people and fostering a better future for China.
