Discover Shanghai’s Iconic Film Locations at the 26th International Film Festival

The 26th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), running from June 14 to 23, is illuminating the cultural landscape of Shanghai, often referred to as the “City of Film.” Film enthusiasts from around the world are flocking to the city to partake in this annual celebration of cinema.

The festival has breathed new life into some of Shanghai’s most historic theaters. The 93-year-old Lyceum Theatre is making its debut as a screening venue, while the Cathay Theatre returns with a fresh refurbishment. The Majestic Theatre, another of China’s oldest Western-style theaters, is hosting the opening film of the festival, “The Eternal Wave.”

These theaters are not just screening venues but are integral parts of Shanghai’s rich cinematic heritage. Nestled among cobblestone alleyways and historic buildings, they offer a window into the city’s vibrant past and present. The areas surrounding them are dotted with iconic streets and landmarks that have featured in numerous films and television series.

Three young Shanghai natives, including a local filmmaker and an urban exploration enthusiast, are taking to the streets to rediscover these cinematic locales. Their leisurely strolls through the city’s nightlife scenes offer a fresh perspective on Shanghai’s charm, blending the old with the new.

Festival-goers and tourists alike are encouraged to embark on their own journeys through these storied streets. Whether it’s exploring the architectural beauty of the theaters or finding the exact spots featured in their favorite films, there’s a piece of cinematic magic waiting for everyone in Shanghai during the SIFF.
