China and Brazil Pledge to Strengthen BRICS Role in Global Governance

China and Brazil have agreed to enhance cooperation within the BRICS framework to strengthen global governance and safeguard the interests of developing countries. This commitment was made during a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on Monday in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized that this year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil—a significant milestone in bilateral ties. “Both sides should grasp the strategic importance of the China-Brazil relationship, enhance its mutually beneficial nature, and highlight its comprehensiveness,” Wang said.

The two countries aim to build a China-Brazil community with a shared future, promoting further alignment of their development strategies. Wang noted that China has always prioritized Brazil in its diplomacy and is willing to elevate the comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level, contributing to global peace and development.

China values Brazil’s significant influence in the Latin American region and is keen to promote cooperation between China, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and the Southern Common Market. With the China-Latin America Forum approaching its 10th anniversary, both sides expressed optimism about ushering in a more fruitful decade for the forum.

As major developing countries, China and Brazil believe they need to make “just, balanced, and constructive voices on international hot issues.” Recently, the two nations jointly issued six common understandings on the political settlement of the Ukraine issue, gaining recognition from an increasing number of countries.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira highlighted the successful visit of Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin to China and the seventh meeting of the Brazil-China High-Level Coordination and Cooperation Committee. Vieira stressed that Brazil highly values its relationship with China and is ready to strengthen cooperation across various fields, including trade and economy.

“Brazil appreciates China’s active role in promoting BRICS cooperation and supports the major initiatives proposed by China,” Vieira said. He added that Brazil and China share similar stances on many issues and that their joint statement on the Ukraine issue is of significant importance.

Brazil is willing to continue strengthening cooperation with China on multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, G20, and BRICS. Vieira noted that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva firmly believes that dialogue and cooperation between China and CELAC are of great significance. He stated that the China-Latin America Forum is a beneficial platform, and Brazil is willing to work with China to promote its new development.

The two sides also exchanged views on the Gaza situation and other issues of common concern.
