China has expressed strong opposition to the recent approval of an estimated $300 million in U.S. arms sales to the Taiwan region, urging the United States to withdraw the plan immediately. Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the Chinese Defense Ministry, made the remarks on Friday, stating that the U.S. move violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique.
“The U.S. has seriously undermined China’s sovereignty and security interests, and severely jeopardized peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits,” Zhang said. He emphasized that the Taiwan question is the number one red line that must not be crossed between China and the U.S.
Zhang accused the U.S. of emboldening ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces, warning that such actions are pushing Taiwan into a dangerous situation that could ultimately harm the U.S. itself.
China has urged the U.S. to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three joint communiques, immediately withdraw the arms sales plan, and cease arming Taiwan in any form. Zhang added that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army will continue to intensify military training and preparedness to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
