China’s Grain Storage Capacity Surpasses 700 Million Tonnes in 2023

China has achieved a significant milestone in its agricultural sector, with the country’s grain storage capacity exceeding 700 million tonnes by the end of 2023. This marks a 36 percent increase since 2014, according to an official from the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration.

Enhancements in Grain Storage Facilities

Since the commencement of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), China has built and upgraded grain storage facilities totaling over 65 million tonnes in capacity. Key performance indicators such as airtightness and thermal insulation have significantly improved. Zhou Guanhua, director of the administration’s safe storage and technology department, highlighted these advancements while speaking with the Science and Technology Daily.

Modernization and Quality Improvement

China has established a comprehensive grain storage system that aligns with grain production, reserves, and distribution. Outdated methods like stack storage and open-air piles have been largely eliminated nationwide. State-owned grain warehouses have adopted “four-in-one” grain storage technologies—covering mechanical ventilation, fumigation, monitoring, and cooling—as standard practices, significantly enhancing grain storage quality.

Focus on Green Technologies

Emphasizing sustainability, China has promoted green grain storage technologies in its warehouses. These innovations encompass temperature control, internal circulation, and comprehensive pest control. By the end of 2023, low-temperature and near-low-temperature grain warehouses across the country had a combined capacity of 200 million tonnes. The comprehensive loss rate in state-owned grain warehouses remained within a reasonable range of 1 percent, ensuring food security and quality.

Implications for Food Security

These developments underscore China’s commitment to enhancing its food security infrastructure. The expansion and modernization of grain storage facilities not only safeguard the nation’s grain reserves but also contribute to global food security by stabilizing supply chains.
