Xi Jinping Encourages UAE Students Learning Chinese to Foster Friendship

Chinese President Xi Jinping has recently penned heartfelt replies to letters from student representatives participating in the “Hundred Schools Project” of Chinese language education in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He encouraged the students to master the Chinese language, deepen their understanding of China, and contribute to the enduring friendship between the two nations.

“I have read each letter from you,” President Xi wrote. “Through your words and drawings, I felt your love for Chinese culture and your aspirations for friendship between China and the UAE.”

President Xi reminisced about the launch of the “Hundred Schools Project” five years ago, a collaborative initiative started alongside UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. “Seeing that learning Chinese has become a new trend in the UAE, and witnessing the cultivation of young ambassadors like you for China-UAE exchanges, I am very pleased,” he expressed.

Highlighting the students’ sentiments, Xi noted, “In your letters, you mention that China and the UAE have ‘held hands’ for 40 years and hope that our two countries will always be good friends. The Chinese people share the same wish.”

Emphasizing the pivotal role of youth in the future of bilateral relations, Xi extended an invitation to the students to visit China. “I welcome you to see the pandas, climb the Great Wall, and consider studying at Chinese universities when you grow up,” he wrote.

President Xi also encouraged more UAE teenagers to learn Chinese and explore China, hoping that they and their Chinese counterparts can engage in mutual exchange and learning. “By planting the seeds of friendship in your hearts, you contribute to a better future for China-UAE relations,” he added.

The “Hundred Schools Project” was officially launched in July 2019 in Beijing, witnessed by Xi and Sheikh Mohamed, who was then the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. Since its inception, the program has seen significant growth, with 171 schools in the UAE now offering Chinese language courses and over 71,000 students learning Chinese.

Recently, 40 elementary and middle school students from two demonstration schools—Hamdan Bin Zayed School and Yas School—wrote letters to President Xi in Chinese. In their letters, they expressed their admiration for Chinese culture and their desire to serve as ambassadors of China-UAE friendship.

The exchange highlights the strengthening cultural ties between China and the UAE, marking a significant milestone in their 40-year relationship. The initiative not only promotes language learning but also fosters mutual understanding and cooperation between the two countries.
