ASTANA, Kazakhstan — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday called on member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to uphold unity, cooperation, inclusiveness, and openness to strengthen the SCO’s role in the region.
Speaking at the meeting of the SCO Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Astana, Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, emphasized the importance of solidarity among member states.
“Through 23 years of joint efforts, the SCO has become a security barrier, a bridge of cooperation, a bond of friendship, and a constructive force in the region,” Wang Yi said.
He noted that some countries pursue hegemony and power politics, engaging in interference and suppression with the aim of undermining the strategic independence of the “Global South” and hindering the revitalization of emerging markets and developing countries.
Wang Yi called on SCO member states to uphold the “Shanghai Spirit”—characterized by mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diverse civilizations, and pursuit of common development—to safeguard their common interests, respond to various challenges, and uphold fairness and justice.
To this end, he put forward four proposals to further enhance cooperation among SCO member states. While details of the proposals were not disclosed, they are expected to focus on deepening collaboration in areas such as security, economic development, and cultural exchange.
