In a firm response to recent diplomatic developments, China has called on the United States to cease sending what it terms “wrong signals” to forces advocating for “Taiwan independence.”
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, expressed China’s strong opposition following the attendance of U.S. representatives at the inauguration ceremony of Lai Ching-te as the new leader of the Taiwan region.
“We firmly oppose any form of official exchanges between China’s Taiwan region and the United States and other countries that have diplomatic relations with China,” Chen stated during a press briefing on Monday. “We strongly condemn any interference in Taiwan affairs under any pretext or by any means.”
The presence of officials from the United States and a few other countries at Lai’s inauguration has heightened tensions between Beijing and Washington, with China reiterating its stance on issues of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Chen warned that efforts by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities to seek foreign support for independence would not alter the “irreversible trend of China’s reunification.” He urged external forces to refrain from meddling in Taiwan affairs, emphasizing that such interference would be futile.
As cross-strait relations remain a critical focal point in regional geopolitics, China’s latest statements reflect its unwavering position on Taiwan and its relations with nations engaging with the Taiwan authorities.
