Serie A giants Juventus have announced the dismissal of manager Massimiliano Allegri, just two days after he led the team to a Coppa Italia victory over Atalanta. This unexpected decision marks a significant shift for the club following their first major trophy win in three years.
In an official statement, Juventus cited conduct that conflicted with the club’s values as the reason for Allegri’s departure. “The firing follows certain behaviors during and after the Italian Cup final that the club deemed incompatible with the values of Juventus, and the behavior that those who represent it should have,” the statement read.
The controversy stems from an incident during stoppage time in the Coppa Italia final. Frustrated by a referee’s call, Allegri ripped off his jacket and sarcastically applauded the referee, actions that led to his ejection with a red card. Subsequently, he received a two-game suspension and a fine of $5,400 imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
The FIGC has confirmed an ongoing investigation into the incident. “We can confirm that an investigation on incident [that] happened during the Coppa Italia Final, in which … Allegri and Tuttosport newspaper’s director Guido Vaciago were involved, is in due course amongst the FIGC’s Prosecutor Office,” the federation stated.
Allegri’s departure raises questions about Juventus’s future leadership. Fans and analysts are closely watching how the club will navigate this abrupt change and what it means for their upcoming Serie A and international campaigns.
