Xi Jinping Highlights Five Principles Behind Progress in China-Russia Relations
At a joint press conference in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin celebrated the advancement of China-Russia relations, attributing their progress to five foundational principles: mutual respect, win-win cooperation, lasting friendship, strategic coordination, and fairness and justice.
Describing their talks as “sincere and cordial,” President Xi noted that both countries have conducted a comprehensive review of their 75 years of diplomatic ties. “The China-Russia relationship has become a prime example of a new form of international relations as well as good-neighborly relations between two major countries,” Xi told reporters.
Mutual Respect and Core Interests
President Xi emphasized that mutual respect is the fundamental principle underpinning China-Russia relations. Both nations render steadfast support for each other’s core interests and major concerns. “This is central to the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for the new era,” he said. The two countries commit to upholding principles of non-alliance, non-confrontation, and not targeting any third party.
Win-Win Cooperation for Mutual Benefit
Highlighting the flourishing economic ties, Xi pointed out that bilateral trade exceeded $240 billion last year, nearly 2.7 times that of a decade ago. He stressed the importance of exploring converging interests, leveraging comparative strengths, and enabling each other’s success. The two nations aim to deepen cooperation in trade, basic research, frontier technologies, and logistics to stabilize global industrial and supply chains.
Lasting Friendship Through Cultural Exchange
President Xi underscored the significance of lasting friendship as the foundation of bilateral relations. Citing the popularity of Pushkin and Tolstoy in China and Peking Opera and tai chi in Russia, he highlighted cultural affinities. The two leaders have designated 2024 and 2025 as China-Russia Years of Culture, promoting activities that enhance mutual understanding and affinity between their peoples.
Strategic Coordination in Global Governance
Both nations are committed to strategic coordination, steering global governance in the right direction. Xi emphasized their firm commitment to safeguarding the UN-centered international system and the international order underpinned by international law. He called for close collaboration on multilateral platforms such as the UN, APEC, and G20 to advance multipolarity and economic globalization.
Fairness, Justice, and Peaceful Resolutions
Addressing global hotspots, President Xi stated that China and Russia are dedicated to fairness and justice, advocating for political settlements. He expressed concern over lingering Cold War mentalities and emphasized the urgency of resolving the Palestine-Israel conflict and finding a political solution to the Ukraine crisis. “China hopes that peace and stability will return to the European continent at an early date and stands ready to play a constructive role to this end,” Xi affirmed.
Strengthening Strategic Partnership
Concluding their meeting, Presidents Xi and Putin signed a joint statement on deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for the new era. They witnessed the signing of several intergovernmental and interagency cooperation documents, signaling a strengthened commitment to their shared future.
