New Caledonia Imposes Curfew Amid Violent Protests Over Voting Reforms

New Caledonia has announced a curfew and a ban on public gatherings after protests against proposed voting reforms escalated into violent riots. Overnight, the French Pacific territory experienced significant unrest, with vehicles set ablaze and shops looted.

In the capital city of Noumea, at least two car dealerships and a bottling factory were deliberately set on fire, according to reports from an AFP journalist on the scene. The violence spread to neighboring towns, with several supermarkets looted in Dumbea and Mont-Dore.

Authorities responded on Tuesday by imposing the curfew to curb further disturbances and restore order. The protests erupted in opposition to proposed changes in the voting system. The ban on public gatherings aims to prevent further escalation as officials work to address the concerns driving the demonstrations.
