Apple Reportedly Developing AI Chips with TSMC for Data Centers

Apple Inc. is reportedly developing its own chips to power artificial intelligence (AI) software in data centers, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Monday. Citing sources familiar with the matter, the report suggests that Apple aims to leverage its chip design expertise for server infrastructure through an internal project codenamed Project ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Center).

Despite being a leader in consumer technology, Apple has been perceived as lagging behind competitors in the AI space. The company has been notably evasive about its plans for AI technology, even as rivals have made significant strides. In a recent interview with Reuters, CEO Tim Cook stated, “We continue to feel very bullish about our opportunity in generative AI and we’re making significant investments.”

Project ACDC has reportedly been underway for several years. However, it remains unclear when or if Apple will officially unveil the project. The initiative is said to focus on developing server chips optimized for running AI models, specifically for inference tasks rather than training AI models.

Apple is closely collaborating with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to design and potentially initiate production of these specialized chips. TSMC is a key partner for Apple, manufacturing the company’s A-series and M-series chips used in iPhones and Macs. Despite the collaboration, it is uncertain whether the partnership has yielded definitive results, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The development of AI chips for data centers could signify a strategic shift for Apple, potentially enhancing the company’s capabilities in AI services and infrastructure. By designing its own AI hardware for servers, Apple could better integrate its hardware and software ecosystems, offering more advanced AI features to users.

As the tech industry increasingly focuses on AI advancements, Apple’s foray into AI chip development may bolster its position in this competitive field. Observers and investors will be watching closely for further announcements regarding Project ACDC and Apple’s broader AI strategy.
