Xi Jinping and Macron Pledge to Strengthen China-France Ties Amid Global Tensions

In a significant move to bolster international cooperation, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace in Paris on Monday. The leaders emphasized the importance of upholding independence and working together to prevent a “new Cold War” or bloc confrontation.

President Xi, on his third state visit to France since 2014, underscored the need for China and France to adhere to the principles that established their diplomatic relations sixty years ago: independence, mutual understanding, foresight, and mutually beneficial cooperation. “We should infuse these timeless values with new meaning suited to our era,” Xi stated.

The discussions highlighted a shared commitment to promoting harmonious coexistence in a diverse world. “China and France should embrace mutual understanding and jointly advance the equitable and orderly progression towards a multipolar world,” Xi remarked, emphasizing the importance of foresight in international relations.

The two leaders addressed the challenges of global economic disruptions, expressing opposition to “decoupling” and the fragmentation of industrial and supply chains. “Together, we must reject barriers and work towards mutual benefits,” Xi said.

Marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations, President Xi voiced his aspirations for the future. “I hope to work with President Macron to carry forward our historical legacy, embark on a new journey for China-France relations in the next sixty years, and contribute anew to world peace, stability, and human progress,” he declared.

President Macron welcomed the deepening ties, noting the significance of the two countries’ roles on the global stage. “France and China share a responsibility to uphold international stability and foster global development,” Macron said.

The meeting signifies a mutual desire to strengthen bilateral relations amidst a complex international landscape, with both nations advocating for collaboration over confrontation. As global tensions fluctuate, the renewed commitments between China and France may play a pivotal role in shaping future diplomatic and economic dynamics.
