16-Year-Old Kris Kim Makes PGA Tour Cut, Youngest Since 2015

In a remarkable achievement, 16-year-old amateur golfer Kris Kim of England has become the youngest player in nine years to make the cut at a Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour event. Playing on a sponsor exemption at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas, United States, Kim showcased exceptional skill and composure beyond his years.

Finishing his second round on Friday with a birdie, Kim carded a 4-under 67. With a total score of 7-under 135, he stood among the 66 players who made the cut, which was set at 6 under. The tournament leader, Jake Knapp, held a score of 14-under 128.

Kim’s accomplishment marks the first time since 2015 that a 16-year-old has made the cut in a PGA Tour event. The last to do so was Kyle Suppa at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Moreover, Kim surpassed Jordan Spieth as the youngest player to make the cut at the Byron Nelson. In 2010, Spieth was two months shy of his 17th birthday when he made his PGA Tour debut at his hometown event, finishing tied for 16th.

Born to South Korean parents, Kim is the son of Ji-Hyun Suh, a former Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour player and native of South Korea. Making his PGA Tour debut, Kim is also the first amateur to be sponsored by the South Korean company CJ Group, which is the title sponsor of the Byron Nelson for the first time.

Kim’s breakthrough highlights the rising influence of young talent in the world of golf and underscores the growing connections between Asian companies and international sports events. His performance is expected to inspire aspiring golfers across Asia and beyond.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Kim to see how he builds upon this historic accomplishment. Regardless of the final outcome, his debut has already left a significant mark on the PGA Tour, signaling a promising future for this young athlete.
