China’s Foreign Trade Off to Strong Start in 2024, Says Customs Minister

China’s foreign trade has seen a robust start in 2024 and is expected to continue its growth in the first half of the year, according to Yu Jianhua, minister of China’s General Administration of Customs (GAC).

Speaking at the Ministers’ Corridor following the closing meeting of the second session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing on Monday, Yu highlighted the positive momentum in trade activities.

In January and February, China’s foreign trade in goods reached 6.61 trillion yuan (approximately $930.96 billion), marking an 8.7 percent year-on-year increase, Yu cited from the latest GAC data.

Trade with countries participating in the Belt and Road cooperation grew even faster, hitting a 9 percent increase in the first two months of 2024. New trade models, including cross-border e-commerce and market procurement, demonstrated strong momentum, further boosting the trade landscape.

The minister emphasized the dedication of the GAC to achieving China’s 2024 growth targets, which were outlined in the recent government work report. “We will implement more measures to facilitate foreign trade and actively seek feedback from Chinese enterprises to guide our efforts,” Yu stated.
