UN Chief Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Escalating Conflict

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, expressing deep concern over the escalating conflict in Gaza, which he described as “worsening by the day.”

Speaking to journalists at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, Guterres emphasized the urgency of halting hostilities for the sake of civilians in Gaza, the hostages held by Hamas, and regional stability. “For the sake of the people of Gaza, the hostages and their families in Israel, and the wider region, I appeal for an immediate ceasefire,” he stated.

The UN chief warned that without a swift agreement, the war’s consequences would “worsen exponentially,” leading to further devastation and a deepening humanitarian crisis. He highlighted the intensifying airstrikes in the Rafah area, cautioning that a military assault there would be “an unbearable escalation,” resulting in thousands more civilian deaths and displacing hundreds of thousands.

Guterres’s appeal comes amid increasing international concern over the conflict’s impact on civilians and regional security. The UN has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and address the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza.

“We are at a critical moment. The choices made in the coming days will have profound consequences for the people of the region and beyond,” Guterres added, urging all parties to prioritize human life and abide by international humanitarian law.
