China’s express delivery industry is witnessing unprecedented growth, handling over 50 billion parcels as of April 29, 2024—achieving this milestone 32 days earlier than in 2023, according to data from the State Post Bureau (SPB).
This surge reflects robust expansion in the first four months of the year. Notably, more than 100 million express packages are passing through rural areas daily, with business volume significantly increasing in the central and western regions.
The sector is undergoing an intelligent transformation, characterized by the modernization of large-scale express distribution centers and the rapid adoption of unmanned warehouses, autonomous vehicles, and drones. These innovations are enhancing efficiency and catering to the growing demand for speedy and reliable delivery services.
In the first two months of 2024, the express delivery development index reached 329.6, marking a 26.7 percent increase from the same period last year. The sub-index for development scale soared by 29.8 percent year on year to 407.1, partly due to high delivery demand during the Spring Festival holiday.
Service quality within the industry is also on the rise, with the sub-index for service quality growing 39.4 percent from the previous year. Additionally, the sub-index for development capacity saw a year-on-year increase of 7.1 percent, indicating strengthening infrastructure and capabilities within the sector.
The express delivery development index is compiled based on data from major logistics firms operating delivery services, reflecting overall business activities and trends in China’s courier sector. This sustained growth underscores the vital role of express delivery in supporting economic activity and connecting communities across the nation.
