Kenya is grappling with widespread devastation as heavy rains and floods have claimed the lives of more than 90 people across the country. Authorities warn that the situation may worsen, with ongoing downpours expected to cause further casualties and property destruction.
Police reports indicate that at least 11 bodies were recovered from various locations on Saturday night alone. Victims were swept away by raging waters while attempting to cross flooded rivers. In a tragic incident in Sultan Hamud, a town in Makueni County, a truck was overwhelmed by floodwaters on Friday, resulting in the deaths of nine people, including six women and three men.
Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome announced the deployment of additional personnel to critical roads to assist motorists and pedestrians navigating hazardous conditions. “We are enhancing our presence on the ground to ensure the safety of all road users,” Koome stated.
Humanitarian organizations have also reported fatalities and injuries from lightning strikes and flash floods, particularly affecting those seeking shelter under trees. The relentless rains have led to the destruction of homes, schools, and businesses in several counties experiencing above-average rainfall.
Kenyan officials and aid groups are urging residents to exercise caution by avoiding flooded areas, relocating to higher ground, and refraining from driving during heavy rains. “The safety of our citizens is paramount. We appeal to everyone to heed weather warnings and take necessary precautions,” said a spokesperson from the National Disaster Management Authority.
The ongoing crisis highlights the urgent need for improved disaster preparedness and infrastructure upgrades to mitigate the impact of natural calamities in the future.
