The Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Phoenix Suns 122-116 in Game 4 of the NBA Western Conference’s first-round playoffs at Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday, completing a sweep to advance to the Western semifinals.
This marks only the second time the Timberwolves have progressed beyond the first round since joining the NBA in 1989. The last occurrence was in 2004 when franchise legend Kevin Garnett led the team, earning the regular season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Garnett held the team’s record for the most consecutive seven-game, 30-plus-point scoring performances in the playoffs until April 26, when Anthony Edwards matched it in Game 3.
Edwards now stands alone with that record after delivering an impressive 40-point performance. He shot 13-for-23 from the field, including seven three-pointers, and made seven of his 10 free throws. Edwards also grabbed a team-high five offensive rebounds. In the fourth quarter, he missed only one of his field goal attempts, contributing 16 points and helping the Timberwolves outscore the Suns 32-24.
“It’s an incredible feeling to make history with this team,” Edwards said after the game. “We believed in ourselves from the start, and now we’re looking forward to the next round.”
The Timberwolves will face their next opponents with momentum on their side, aiming to continue their historic postseason run.
