Chinese Mainland Urges Taiwan to Fully Resume Direct Cross-Strait Flights

A spokesperson from the Chinese mainland has called on Taiwan to fully resume direct cross-Strait flights and maritime routes, highlighting the significant benefits for people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

On Sunday, Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, emphasized the importance of reinstating direct maritime passenger services, including the Pingtan-Taipei and Xiamen-Taichung routes. She also urged the resumption of direct passenger flights between Taiwan and 30 destinations on the Chinese mainland.

“Direct cross-Strait flights and voyages have greatly facilitated visits between compatriots from both sides and enhanced their common interests,” Zhu stated in response to media inquiries.

While some direct air and maritime routes have partially returned since last year, restrictions remain. Currently, destinations for air passengers are limited, and direct maritime passenger services have yet to fully resume. Zhu expressed hope that Taiwan would heed the proposals from the public and shipping enterprises on both sides to restore these essential links as soon as possible.

The call to action underscores ongoing efforts to strengthen cross-Strait relations and promote mutual understanding through increased connectivity. Resuming these routes is seen as a vital step in fostering economic ties and cultural exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.
