In a significant move to foster closer ties across the Taiwan Strait, Wang Huning, chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, met with a delegation from the Kuomintang (KMT) led by Fu Kun-chi on Saturday. The meeting underscored a shared commitment to enhancing cross-Straits relations and promoting peaceful development.
Wang, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, emphasized the Chinese mainland’s steadfast adherence to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus. “We resolutely oppose ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities and interference from external forces,” he stated.
He reaffirmed the mainland’s dedication to promoting exchanges, cooperation, and integrated development across the Strait. Wang expressed optimism about the role of KMT legislators in bolstering these efforts, highlighting the importance of greater participation from compatriots on both sides, particularly the younger generation.
Addressing the recent earthquakes that impacted Hualien in Taiwan, Wang conveyed the deep concern of mainland compatriots for those affected. He offered assistance for post-disaster reconstruction, reinforcing a sense of shared community and mutual support.
Fu Kun-chi, leading the KMT delegation, echoed the call for enhanced exchanges and cooperation. He emphasized the need to build upon the common political foundation established by the KMT and the CPC. “It is hoped that both sides will jointly safeguard peace in the Taiwan Strait and guide cross-Straits relations back to the track of peaceful development,” Fu remarked.
The meeting signifies a mutual aspiration to strengthen connections across the Strait, with both parties recognizing the benefits of collaboration and dialogue. As tensions in the region draw international attention, such initiatives underscore the importance of communication in fostering stability and understanding.
