China has called on the United States to establish open and practical military relations based on non-conflict, non-confrontation, equality, and mutual respect. Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks on Thursday during a regular press briefing.
Wu was commenting on the recent video call between Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on April 16. The two defense chiefs engaged in a candid and in-depth exchange of views on China-U.S. relations, military ties, the Taiwan question, the South China Sea issue, and other matters of common concern. According to Wu, the discussions achieved positive and pragmatic results.
“The call is of positive significance for maintaining the overall stability of relations between the two militaries,” Wu stated. He added that since the end of last year, both militaries have conducted a series of exchanges and cooperative activities, which have played a beneficial role in stabilizing and improving bilateral relations.
Wu expressed hope that the United States would meet China halfway to build military ties that gradually accumulate mutual trust. “This will truly serve as a stable cornerstone for the development of bilateral relations,” he said.
