In 2023, China has overtaken Japan to become the world’s largest automobile exporter. According to data from China’s General Administration of Customs, the country’s auto exports soared to 5.22 million vehicles, marking a 57.4 percent increase year on year.
This significant growth is driven by a remarkable surge in new energy vehicle (NEV) exports, which skyrocketed by 77.6 percent to surpass 1.2 million units last year. Exports of pure electric vehicles expanded by 80.9 percent, while those of hybrid vehicles increased by 47.8 percent year on year, as reported by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).
The surge in exports reflects China’s strengthening position in the global automotive industry, particularly in the NEV sector. The country’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development in automotive technology is propelling it to the forefront of the global market.
