A high-level meeting of the Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative (GDI) convened on Wednesday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The meeting, chaired by Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, brought together international representatives to discuss collaborative efforts towards sustainable development.
In his opening remarks, Fu emphasized China’s commitment to fostering global growth and forging international consensus since the GDI’s inception in 2021.
“We have been working closely with other Group of Friends members to enhance synergy between the GDI and the 2030 Agenda,” Fu stated. “Our aim is to ensure that countries can truly benefit from the fruitful cooperation under the initiative.”
Fu highlighted the expansion of the GDI’s network, noting that practical cooperation has led to significant outcomes and steady progress in institution building. “The collective efforts have not only expanded our network of friends but have also yielded tangible results in various development sectors,” he added.
The meeting underscored the importance of international collaboration in addressing global challenges and advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Representatives from participating countries and organizations shared insights and discussed strategies to enhance cooperation under the GDI framework.
The Global Development Initiative, proposed by China in 2021, aims to support poverty alleviation, food security, COVID-19 response and vaccines, development financing, climate change, green development, industrialization, digital economy, and connectivity. The Group of Friends serves as a platform for UN member states to coordinate efforts and mobilize resources for sustainable development.
