Tesla, the U.S. electric vehicle and clean energy company, is set to begin construction on its new megafactory project in Shanghai this May. The facility, located in the Lingang new area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, will be capable of producing 10,000 Megapack units annually, equivalent to nearly 40 gigawatt hours of energy storage.
This marks Tesla’s first energy storage megafactory project outside the United States, with mass production expected to commence in the first quarter of 2025. The Megapack is a powerful battery designed to provide energy storage and support, helping to stabilize power grids and prevent outages.
The new megafactory is scheduled to start production in the fourth quarter of 2024. Over the past few years, Tesla has steadily increased its investment in the Lingang area, expanding the production capacity of its Gigafactory Shanghai and establishing additional facilities, including a supercharger manufacturing factory.
In January 2019, Tesla began construction of Gigafactory Shanghai, becoming the first wholly foreign-owned car plant to benefit from China’s new policy allowing foreign carmakers to establish wholly owned subsidiaries. The plant demonstrated remarkable efficiency, delivering its first batch of made-in-China vehicles within a year.
The official launch of the new megafactory project last December represents a significant milestone for Tesla’s global expansion. As the company continues to invest in Shanghai, it underscores the strategic importance of the Chinese mainland in Tesla’s international growth plans.
