San Francisco Mayor London Breed is leading a delegation of 30 officials on a diplomatic trip to China, aiming to strengthen business ties and, potentially, bring pandas back to the city’s zoo.
During a visit to Shenzhen in south China on Monday, Mayor Breed expressed enthusiasm for hosting pandas at the San Francisco Zoo. “My plan is to do everything I can to make it clear that our San Francisco Zoo is ready, willing, and able to host pandas,” she stated.
“We think that it’s a wonderful opportunity. Panda diplomacy is important as a way to build bridges,” Breed noted. “Can you imagine how exciting that would be for a city like San Francisco?”
The mayor’s initiative is part of a broader effort to improve relationships with China and boost tourism, positioning San Francisco as a driving force of innovation and economic leadership.
A member of the delegation echoed the sentiment, saying, “I believe pandas will revitalize San Francisco.”
