In a crucial diplomatic exchange on Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, discussing escalating regional tensions following an attack on the Iranian embassy’s consular section in Damascus, Syria.
Amir-Abdollahian briefed Wang Yi on Iran’s stance regarding the incident, emphasizing that the United Nations Security Council failed to provide an adequate response to what Tehran views as a violation of its sovereignty. He asserted Iran’s right to self-defense while underscoring the sensitive nature of the current regional situation. “Iran is willing to exercise restraint and has no intention of further escalating the situation,” Amir-Abdollahian stated.
Expressing strong condemnation, Wang Yi labeled the attack on the Iranian embassy as a serious breach of international law and “unacceptable.” He acknowledged Iran’s restrained response, noting that it was limited and defensive in nature. “China appreciates Iran’s commitment to not targeting regional and neighboring countries and its continuation of a good-neighborly and friendly policy,” Wang Yi added.
The Chinese foreign minister, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, conveyed confidence in Iran’s ability to manage the situation effectively. “It is believed that Iran can handle the situation well and spare the region from further turmoil while safeguarding its own sovereignty and dignity,” he remarked.
Highlighting broader regional concerns, Wang Yi pointed to the ongoing Gaza conflict as a source of spillover tensions. He emphasized the urgent need to implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 2728 to halt the conflict, protect civilians, and prevent worsening humanitarian crises. “China is willing to maintain communication with Iran for a comprehensive, just, and lasting settlement of the Palestinian issue,” he affirmed.
