The Chinese embassy in the United States has strongly rebuked recent statements made by the U.S. and Japan, accusing them of interfering in China’s domestic affairs and violating international norms. The criticism comes after a joint statement issued by U.S. and Japanese leaders earlier this week, which China views as containing “smearing words” on issues such as Taiwan, maritime disputes, and nuclear policy.
In a statement released on Friday, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy said, “The United States and Japan, with their Cold War mentality and small group politics, smeared China on the Taiwan question, maritime issues, and policy on nuclear weapons, grossly interfered in China’s domestic affairs, and violated the basic norms in international relations.”
“China deplores and opposes such moves and has made serious demarches to the U.S. side,” the spokesperson added, emphasizing Beijing’s strong discontent with the joint statement.
Highlighting the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, the spokesperson noted, “The Taiwan question is at the very core of China’s core interests and the most important and sensitive issue in China-U.S. relations. It is purely China’s domestic affair and brooks no external interference.”
The embassy urged the United States to adhere strictly to the one-China principle and the provisions outlined in the three China-U.S. joint communiques. “We urge the U.S. to prudently and properly handle Taiwan-related issues and turn President Biden’s commitment of not supporting ‘Taiwan independence’ into concrete actions,” the spokesperson concluded.
The strong response from the Chinese embassy underscores the escalating tensions in the region, as China’s relations with the United States and Japan face increasing strain over a range of geopolitical issues.
