China and Micronesia Pledge to Elevate Bilateral Ties on 35th Anniversary

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with President Wesley W. Simina of the Federated States of Micronesia in Beijing on Tuesday, marking a significant step in enhancing the relationship between the two nations. As they commemorate the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations, both leaders expressed a commitment to deepening cooperation across various sectors.

President Xi emphasized China’s willingness to support Micronesia in safeguarding its national sovereignty and independence, underscoring respect for Micronesia’s chosen path of development aligned with its national conditions. “China stands ready to work with Micronesia to revitalize its economy and improve the livelihoods of its people,” Xi stated.

The discussions highlighted the importance of maintaining high-level exchanges and dialogues to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership. Both countries agreed to accelerate cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, focusing on infrastructure projects that would bolster economic growth and connectivity.

Cultural and educational exchanges were also on the agenda, with President Xi inviting more young people from Micronesia to study in China. “We look forward to enhancing people-to-people ties through cooperation in culture, health, and education,” he remarked.

Addressing global challenges, Xi reiterated China’s commitment to assist Micronesia in combating climate change within the framework of South-South cooperation. He also highlighted the need for capacity-building initiatives to empower Micronesia in sustainable development efforts.

The two leaders concurred on the importance of multilateralism and agreed to strengthen coordination within international platforms such as the United Nations and the Pacific Islands Forum. “Together, we aim to uphold justice and contribute to global peace and development,” Xi affirmed.

Emphasizing mutual respect and non-interference, President Xi noted that China’s relations with Pacific island countries are based on mutual help and are not directed at any third party. He called for external parties to respect the sovereignty and collaboration between China and Micronesia.

President Simina expressed gratitude for China’s longstanding support, acknowledging the positive impact of bilateral cooperation on Micronesia’s development. He conveyed readiness to deepen ties and work closely with China on regional and international issues.

The meeting signals a renewed commitment to partnership as both nations look forward to a future of shared prosperity and development.
