Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake Strikes Northern Molucca Sea off Indonesia

A powerful magnitude-6.5 earthquake struck the northern Molucca Sea region off Indonesia on Tuesday, according to the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG). The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the sea surface.

Despite the significant magnitude, the BMKG reported that there is no tsunami warning in effect. Residents in nearby areas felt the tremors, but there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Indonesia, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity due to the convergence of several tectonic plates. The Molucca Sea, situated between the islands of Sulawesi and Maluku, is a seismically active region.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have urged residents to stay alert for potential aftershocks. Emergency services are on standby to respond if necessary.

In recent years, Indonesia has experienced several significant earthquakes, underscoring the importance of disaster preparedness and robust early warning systems.
