China’s New Germplasm Bank Preserves Qinghai-Xizang Plateau Biodiversity

China has taken a significant step in preserving the unique biodiversity of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau with the successful completion of its new germplasm resources bank in Qinghai Province.

Led by the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this state-of-the-art facility serves as a comprehensive platform for sample management, genetic analysis, and data sharing.

Boasting specialized storage units, including ultra-low temperature freezers for long-term preservation, spaces for living plants and animals, dedicated fish storage, and sections for medicinal materials and microorganisms, the germplasm bank is equipped to safeguard a vast array of biological resources.

To date, the facility has preserved over 50,000 germplasm resources, significantly bolstering conservation efforts on the plateau. This immense collection is expected to play a crucial role in scientific research, ecological restoration, and sustainable development in the region.

The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, often referred to as the “Roof of the World,” is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna adapted to its high-altitude environment. The establishment of the germplasm bank marks a milestone in China’s commitment to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.

“The germplasm bank will not only preserve genetic resources but also provide valuable data for understanding the impacts of climate change and human activities on the plateau’s ecosystem,” said a representative from the institute.

Researchers and scientists from around the world are expected to collaborate through this platform, fostering international cooperation in the study and preservation of alpine ecosystems.
