Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi affirmed China’s support for Timor-Leste’s formal accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during a meeting on Thursday with Bendito dos Santos Freitas, Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
Since elevating their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership last September, China and Timor-Leste have witnessed a historic leap in bilateral ties. Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, emphasized China’s willingness to be a trustworthy and reliable partner to Timor-Leste. He highlighted China’s commitment to supporting Timor-Leste’s development path that aligns with its national conditions and its aspirations to play a more significant role in international and regional affairs.
“China’s development will provide support and bring opportunities for developing countries, including Timor-Leste,” Wang stated, underscoring the mutual benefits of strengthened cooperation. He called on both nations to implement the important consensus reached by their leaders and to promote the continuous enhancement of their comprehensive strategic partnership.
