Chinese Mainland Warns Taiwan Authorities Against Provocations in Kinmen

The Chinese mainland has issued a stern warning to the Taiwan authorities regarding recent military movements in Kinmen, emphasizing that any provocative actions are destined to fail.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, addressed the issue on Wednesday in Beijing, stating that the mainland is closely monitoring the Taiwan military’s activities near Kinmen, an island group located just off the southeastern coast of the Chinese mainland.

Chen’s remarks came in response to media inquiries about the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities’ announcement of planned live-ammunition firing exercises in Kinmen scheduled for April.

“Whether it is routine training or targeted provocation, the DPP authorities know better than anyone else,” Chen said, underscoring the mainland’s position on maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

He highlighted that the compatriots in Kinmen have witnessed the transformation between peace and war and have an increasing yearning for lasting tranquility. “They have made the right choice between firing guns and building bridges,” Chen added, referencing the local population’s desire for peaceful development.

Kinmen, historically a flashpoint due to its proximity to the Chinese mainland, has been a focal point of cross-strait relations. The island’s residents have long advocated for peace and stronger ties, favoring economic cooperation over military confrontation.

The Chinese mainland’s admonition reflects its steadfast commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, while promoting peaceful reunification and opposing any form of separatist activities by the Taiwan authorities.

As tensions occasionally flare across the Taiwan Strait, both sides recognize the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding to ensure regional stability and prosperity.
