Beijing to Host WTT Grand Smash for Next Five Years Starting This Autumn

Beijing is set to become the epicenter of international table tennis this autumn, as the city has secured the hosting rights for the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash for the next five years. The announcement was made on Tuesday, marking a significant return of major table tennis events to China’s capital since the 1961 World Table Tennis Championships.

The inaugural event will take place from September 26 to October 6 at the historic Shougang Park in Shijingshan District. The WTT China Smash joins the Singapore Smash and the newly announced Saudi Arabia Smash, offering players the opportunity to earn up to 2,000 points across five categories: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

“We’re honored to be back in this Olympic city, which has not seen a major international table tennis event of this scale since 1961,” said Steve Dainton, WTT director and CEO of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Group. “With China being our largest market and Beijing the capital, we couldn’t be prouder to bring the China Smash to such an iconic location. This is a testament to the sport’s growth, the appeal of the WTT Grand Smash, and the city’s enduring allure.”

Liu Guoliang, president of the Chinese Table Tennis Association and chairman of the WTT board, expressed his enthusiasm: “Beijing is a globally renowned sports city, having proudly hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Now, with the arrival of a WTT Grand Smash, Beijing’s esteemed capability to host major sporting events is once again highlighted. I am confident that we will not only honor our rich history but also forge new milestones.”

The selection of Beijing as the host city underscores China’s pivotal role in the world of table tennis. The return of such a prestigious event not only boosts the sport’s profile in the region but also offers fans and athletes an opportunity to engage in a city steeped in sporting legacy.

The WTT China Smash promises to be a highlight on the international table tennis calendar, drawing top players from around the globe to compete in the heart of China. As the city prepares to welcome athletes and spectators alike, excitement is building for what is anticipated to be a memorable series of competitions over the next five years.
