Penguins Delight Visitors Amid Tulips in Nanjing Park

Nanjing residents were treated to an unexpected delight when two Humboldt penguins made a special appearance among the vibrant tulip blossoms at Zhongshan Botanical Garden. The sight of the waddling duo amidst a sea of colorful flowers brought smiles and surprise to many parkgoers.

The penguins, artificially bred at Nanjing Underwater World—a popular aquarium in east China’s Jiangsu Province—are accustomed to warmer climates, making them well-suited for springtime outings. According to their keepers, taking the penguins outdoors is part of their annual enrichment activities, allowing the birds to experience new environments and stimulate their senses.

“It’s incredible to see penguins in the park,” exclaimed one visitor. “They seemed to enjoy the tulips as much as we do!”

Humboldt penguins are native to the coasts of Chile and Peru and are known for their adaptability to warmer temperatures compared to their Antarctic relatives. By introducing them to the botanical garden, the aquarium aims to raise public awareness about the species and promote conservation efforts.

The unexpected encounter has quickly become a highlight for both locals and tourists, adding a unique charm to the already picturesque gardens during the tulip season.
